Getting Naked…Why Not? The Trees Do It!

It’s the time of year when many of us think about putting on a sweater and our boots and enjoying an autumn walk. It’s also the time of year that the trees shed their leaves… essentially, they get naked. From my office windows I watch oak and maple trees show off all spring and summer in their color and splendor and give one final hurrah in October. Then they stand in all their bare glory for months on end holding their heads high to wind, rain, sleet and snow. If they can do it, so can we!

vulnerabilityWhat comes up for you when I say ‘naked’? Fear? Anxiety? Comparison? Rationalizing your physical state (figure)? Maybe you have a different take on it and experience relief, delight or even a sense of innocence. There is undoubtedly a reaction of some sort. Now what if I ask you to get naked? Quite an invitation, if I say so myself.

Here’s the bombshell: you are going to have to be vulnerable to get there. YIKES! Consider this, Naked is being Vulnerable and being Vulnerable can feel like being Naked … and it all equates to being Uncomfortable. Have you ever heard the saying that the greatest moments of growth happen when you are uncomfortable? It’s true!

You have to be willing to bare it all, upset the apple cart, shed your leaves, to find your path upward and onward. It is from this vantage point that you will be able to see where you are currently and discern where you want to be ultimately. Until this gap is identified, your efforts and toil can be just simply busyness. See this gap as the opportunity to take the first step of identifying what can be done to close it, and to determine what small action can get you a step closer to where you want to be. Your efforts will become focused and relevant, not just busy, when they are clearly aligned with getting you to your vision of ultimate.

Is your busyness producing the results that will get you to the ultimate goal? Or are you just buzzing around with the belief that doing something is better than doing nothing? Get “naked,” get vulnerable, uncover the truth, and in the time of transformation and renewal you can show off your full splendor!
